Bioeffluent is produced from the wastewater treatment process in a treatment plant before it is released to the river and environment. The bioeffluent that is reused as an alternative water source for industrial purposes can also help alleviate water shortage following the drought season. In fact, the reuse of bioeffluent can reduce dependency on treated water supply especially in landscaping, non-food crops and creation of artificial wetland. Now, IWK sewage treatment plants produce approximately 5,092 MLD.

 
 
 
 

Biosolids is the final form of product from wastewater treatment plant whereby it is dried up. It is a valuable resource as it contains high organic content and nutrients to enhance plant growth as it contains both micro and macro nutrients. Studies were conducted by IWK (in collaboration with a few local universities) to observe the efficiency of biosolids as fertiliser for non-food crop. One of the few successes following the research carried out on the biosolids is related to the growth of rubber trees.

 

Biogas is produced in IWK’s sewage treatment plants with Anaerobic Digester system. biogas is one of the sources of renewable energy that can generate electricity. Currently, there are 6 sewage treatment plants in IWK with the capability to produce 10,000 m3/day, with the potential to generate 20 MW hour/day.
